Eslite Children's Bookstore

Taipei, Taiwan

The foundation of the design concept for this bookstore is a spaceship. The ceiling is hexagonal, with paddle below, while the floor is staggered and leads upward, giving children the sense of being led up toward the oval area in the center of the space from the entrance. From the ceiling hangs a large light fixture, which works in concert with the counter below. The space extends out through the entrance, with either side of the entrance area transformed into display windows which can be used to pass on information about products and activities.

Tzu-Lu Reception Center

Taipei, Taiwan

The site is long, narrow, and irregularly shaped. In front of it is one of Taipei’s more major roads—Ren’ai Road, which runs perpendicular to the front of the Presidential Palace; to the rear is a community park. In an attempt to emphasize the length and narrowness of the site, the entrance to the visitor center extends toward the rear of the site, where the physical entrance to the building has been placed. This creates a one-way circulation reminiscent of a museum, while giving visitors a chance to prepare themselves for what they are about to see while passing through. The model home section is located on the second floor, with full-length windows facing the trees alongside the road, while also laying out the circulation for visitors to this third section of the site.

Kuan’s Living Renovation Project

Shanghai, China

Kuan’s Living is a well-known Taiwanese chain of bedding retailers, and in the fall of 2006 the company wanted to establish their Chinese head office on Shanghai’s Moganshan Rd. in a repurposed textiles factory building. Moganshan Rd. is in a section of Shanghai likened to Soho in New York, with large numbers of preserved old buildings and factories which now serve as exhibition spaces for artists and places for grassroots artistic promotional activities.
